SELAH – What a difference a year made for the 2009 Burlington-Edison Tigers fastpitch softball team.
A year ago, they walked off the field as the Othello Huskies celebrated on the dirt infield after winning the 2A state fastpitch championship. A much different ending played out for essentially the same Tiger players Saturday afternoon at Carlon Park in Selah as Burlington-Edison celebrated in the dirt infield after defeating the Ellensburg Bulldogs 5-1 for the state title – ending their incredible season with a 22-6 overall record.
Tiger starting pitcher Lindsey Dawson charged forward to field a softly-batted ground ball by Ellensburg’s Kelsey Bailes, and with the rest of the Tiger defense already rushing in to celebrate, Dawson quickly tossed the ball to first baseman Rachelle Berry to record the final out of the championship game.
At that moment, Tiger coaches and reserves rushed the field to hug and celebrate with the Burlington-Edison starters, who helped garner the second softball championship in school history – the first since the 1987 team. This year’s squad was the first fastpitch championship in Burlington-Edison history.
Dawson struck out 11 Bulldog batters and made one diving catch of a very short popup to end a situation where Ellensburg had one runner on second base in the fifth - the inning the only Bulldog run crossed home plate. Dawson also walloped a three-run home run to deep center field with two-outs in the bottom of the fifth to help herself with her own bat. Just prior to that, Rachelle Berry drove in Ashlynn Ishikawa from second base for the Tigers’ second run. Ishikawa reached base on a lead-off single to set the tone for Burlington-Edison’s four-run fifth inning.
Dawson was outstanding throughout the tournament on offense and defense. With the bat, she cracked four singles, two doubles, scored two runs and had the team’s only home run of the tournament. While pitching, Dawson struck out 37 opponents, walked 14 and gave up just nine hits at state.
Rachel Tingley scored twice in the title game after getting on base with a lead-off double to start the game and a single in the Tigers’ magic fifth. Rachelle Berry capped her season batting .500 at the state tournament by recording six hits and was the only Tiger player to score at least one run in each of the four tournament games (5).
Jasmine Rigelman also played exceptionally for Burlington-Edison, collecting six base hits with three RBIs. Add Rigelman’s seven spectacular defensive put-outs, which included diving catches, running out-of-play to catch foul balls, and throw-outs from her third base position to go along with her great performance at the plate for a terrific way to end her high school fastpitch career.
Other Tiger seniors going out on top along with Jasmine Rigelman: shortstop Amy Entrikin, center fielder Rachel Tingley, right fielder Ashlynn Ishikawa and first baseman Rachelle Berry.
The other members of the 2A state champion Burlington-Edison Tigers: catcher Jessica Tingley, second baseman Samantha Rigelman, left fielder Holly Bradley, Samm Alex, Melissa Solis, Chloe Robinson, Gabby Panetti, Ryleigh Swagerty, Jessica Sligar and Brie Lopez. Coaches: Head coach Darcy Taylor, Justin McGrew, Kyle Axelson, John McDermott, and student manager Ritchie Ortiz.
Dawson was outstanding throughout the tournament on offense and defense. With the bat, she cracked four singles, two doubles, scored two runs and had the team’s only home run of the tournament. While pitching, Dawson struck out 37 opponents, walked 14 and gave up just nine hits at state.

SELAH – The Burlington-Edison Tigers fastpitch softball team will play for the 2A state championship for the second year in a row as they down the Tumwater Thunderbirds 5-3 in the semi-final game Saturday morning at Carlon Park in Selah.
Jasmine Rigelman drove in two runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the Tigers up by two runs, 4-2. Amy Entrikin scored an insurance run for the Tigers from third in the top of the seventh, the third RBI by Rigleman in the game. Rachelle Berry and Rachel Tingley scored early on for Burlington-Edison.
Tiger pitcher Lindsey Dawson was as sparkling at the plate as she was pitching. Dawson was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a late-game single. After stealing second, Dawson nearly scored from second on an Amy Entrikin one-out single to right field. The throw home by Tumwater right fielder Maddie Davis was in time to get Dawson at the plate. Thunderbird catcher Katie Blomgren swiped at the sliding Dawson, tagging her a foot before home plate for the second out of the seventh. Entrikin later scored on Rigleman’s second single of the game for the final Tiger tally.
Dawson struck out 11 Tumwater batters, walked three and gave up four hits – including a home run by Kate Blomgren to center field in the sixth. Dawson picked up her third win of the tournament and will pitch again in the 2A championship for the Tigers.

TACOMA – The Cubs exited the WIAA State 3A Fastpitch Tournament at the hands of Union High School of Camas early this afternoon. The Union Titans overcame a 2-0 Sedro-Woolley lead in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs on their only three hits of the game.
Two critical errors played a major part in the big inning for the Titans – a pop fly between the pitchers circle and third base that dropped off of Sarah Moquins glove for a two base error and an ill conceived throw by Cheyenne Best to third after a wild pitch that went into left field and allowed a run to score.
The Cubs offense in this game came from Wendy Ringhouse who knocked in Anna Gallagher running for Ashley Joneli) in the fifth and Maddie Lynch-Crumrine, who tripled and was driven in by Holly Hawkins single in the sixth.
The Titans scored their runs in the sixth on a single by Alex Cline, a double from Jamie Henderson, a double from Lindsay Sasse, a two base error, and a sacrifice fly to center from Mariah Dawson.
Bailey Brewer gave up three hits and struck out 11 in the losing effort and smacked a double to deep left field in the fourth but was stranded after Maria Dawson struck out the next three batters.
The Cubs prospects for a return trip to State next year as they will return all of their starters but Wendy Ringhouse.

Clutch hit from Ashley Joneli sends Lady Cubs to State

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs came up with two runs in the sixth from the bottom half of their order and Bailey Brewer overcame a lead off double in the seventh to strike out three batters to advance to next weekend’s State 3A Tournament in Tacoma with a 3-2 win over the Everett Gulls of the 3A Western Conference.
Brewer struck out 11 in five innings of work despite struggling with her control at times. She walked four, allowed one run and two hits.
Sedro-Woolley picked up their initial run in the first when lead off hitter Cheyenne Best singled, then scored on a wild pitch. Everett answered the next inning with a run after Chailah Forman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Everet took the lead 2-1 in the f0urth on an ill-advised throw by the Cubs’ defense to second base on a double steal that allowed a run to score.
The Cubs finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Holly Hawkins walked and was pinch-run for by Genyssa McCauley.
Sarah Moquin followed with a single that advanced McCauley to second. McCauley moved up to third on off-target pickoff attempt to first. McCauley beat out the throw home on a DeeAnna Boonstra grounder to knot up the score at 2-2.
Moquin advanced to third and Boonstra to second on the play, bringing up Joneli, who singled up the middle. Moquin scored, but Boonstra was thrown out at the plate on a controversial call as Everett catcher Anna Hudson appeared to block the plate before she had the ball. Hudson blocked the plate so well that Boonstra appeared to never have touched the plate.
Bailey Brewer came up huge in the seventh inning after she gave up a lead off double to Lauren Kesterson, which was followed with an intentional walk to Alexandra Hudson to set up the force at any base. Everett successfully executed the double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. Brewer struck out the next three hitters to close out the win for the Cubs, including a called third strike on the final out.
For the game, Brewer went five innings, striking out nine and walking 4.
Mount Vernon dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Lynnwood and their season came to an end. Lynnwood and Everett are playing in the final match up of the tournament to determine the final State berth from District 1.

Tigers bash Borderites 17-0 in 5 innings take 3rd in District

LYNDEN – Tiger hitters feasted on Blaine pitching, sending 20 hitters to the plate in the first inning and taking a 14-0 lead into the second. This gave Tiger coach Darcy Taylor the chance to rest some regulars as a number of freshman and sophomore reserves were able to see action in the last 3 innings.
Tiger second starter Brie Lopez turned in 5 strong innings for the win. Offensive stars included right fielder Ashlynn Ishikawa who had a triple and a double for 3 RBI in the first inning and 2 additional singles. Lindsay Dawson also clubbed a 3 RBI triple from the designated player spot before taking a seat on the bench.
Amanda Richards struggled with her control issuing 6 walks and her location hanging too many pitches high in the strike zone for Tiger hitters. Both Burlington-Edison and Blaine were throwing their second starters as Tiger ace Lindsay Dawson and Borderites ace Caitlin Dudley pitched in the first game of the day.
The game was called after the 5th inning due to the ten run rule – which in tournament play states that the game will be halted if either team leads by more than 10 runs after 5 innings are complete. The Tigers ten-runned Blaine in their matchup during the regular season as well.
The Tigers now await the announcement of their seeding in the State 2A Tournament to be held next weekend in Selah.
