YAKIMA – Evan Coulter used Tumwater’s lane like an employee-of-the-month parking space, gliding into it often and uncontested to put up 18 points to lead the Burlington-Edison Tigers to an opening round 80-41 blowout of the Tumwater Thunderbirds at the 2A boys’ basketball state tournament Wednesday night.
Colin Stewart contributed 15 points and even better defense for the Tigers, swiping the ball three times. Stewart was also 6-of-7 from the line. Craig Babington added 14 points for Burlington-Edison.
The Tigers pulled down 40 total rebounds (14 offense, 26 defense) to Tumwater’s 27. The Thunderbirds’ offensive threat was heavily compromised by Burlington-Edison’s steady defense. Tumwater shot a miserable 15-for-50 (30%), in marked contrast to the Tigers’ 32-for-59 (54%), which included 13-for-16 (81%) shooting in the third quarter.
The Tigers will next face the Clarkston Bantams – the District 7 #1 – Thursday night at 9 p.m. and the game will be webcast live here on SkagitRadio.com.
