STANWOOD – In spite of graduating eight seniors from last year’s team that went 22-7 and placed 6th in the 3A state basketball tournament, the Meadowdale Mavericks picked-up where they left off last season with a 55-54 season-opening win over the Stanwood Spartans in boys’ high school basketball.

The Mavericks held an early 11 point lead and led for most of the game, but needed two clutch free throws from senior Matt Beucherie to hand the Spartans their second defeat in two games.  Stanwood should be credited with an excellent comeback that put them in a position to win the game in the final seconds.

Meadowdale was led by Sam Werner’s 16 points and Riley Neff-Warner’s 14 points, while the Spartans were paced by 19 points from senior Kale Schmidt, who buried five three-point bombs. Senior Zach Johnson also chipped in with 18 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.

Individual Scoring:

Meadowdale: Werner 16, Neff-Warner 14, Dooley 8, Beucherie 6, Tallman 6, Buck 5

Stanwood: Schmidt 19, Johnson 18, Haugstad 7, Schroyer 6, Cook 4
