BELLINGHAM – After trailing for nearly 14 minutes on the game clock, the Burlington-Edison Tigers scored 30 unanswered points in less than eight minutes of the second quarter on their way to a 54-13 victory over the Sehome Mariners Friday night at Civic Field in Bellingham.

A 71-yard pass from quarterback Hayden Knight to tight end Ryan McDonald on their first possession gave Sehome a 6-0 lead.  Inspired play by their defense allowed the Mariners to hold that lead until Andrew Furney’s 26-yard field goal made it 6-3.

Starting from their own seven yard line following an interception, the Tiger onslaught began with what is believed to be a school record 93-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Boe to Achilles Wynn, who took the perfect pass in stride and went untouched into the Sehome endzone.

Mikey Sanchez then scored three touchdowns in less than five minutes, beginning with a two yard scoring run, followed by a 52-yard pass from Boe, and capped by a 49-yard return of a free kick after a safety to extend the Tigers’ lead to 33-6 at the half.

Boe’s seven-yard run to cap the Tigers’ initial second-half drive gave Burlington-Edison a 40-6 lead, sophomore fullback Andy Agen’s eight-yard run made it 47-6 after three quarters, and sophomore Dominic Maldonado capped a streak of 54 unanswered Tiger points with a 16-yard fourth quarter touchdown run.

Burlington-Edison improved to 2-0 with the win and the Tigers will be back in Bellingham next Friday night to play Squalicum.  Sehome fell to 0-2 and the Mariners will travel to Mount Vernon to battle the Bulldogs next Friday.  Both of those games will be webcast live on SkagitRadio.com.
