TACOMA – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs capped a dominating day during which they posted four straight shutouts with an impressive 10-0 victory over Bainbridge Island in the 3A state softball championship game.
All four Sedro-Woolley wins were webcast live on SkagitRadio.com, with Jon Jensen providing play-by-play of the first two games and Mike Leeper calling the semi finals and state championship game. Jensen had a prior sports broadcasting commitment that prevented him from calling the two evening games and we thank Leeper for his clutch performance that allowed us to webcast the night games.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs came up with two runs in the sixth from the bottom half of their order and Bailey Brewer overcame a lead off double in the seventh to strike out three batters to advance to next weekend’s State 3A Tournament in Tacoma with a 3-2 win over the Everett Gulls of the 3A Western Conference.
Brewer struck out 11 in five innings of work despite struggling with her control at times. She walked four, allowed one run and two hits.
Sedro-Woolley picked up their initial run in the first when lead off hitter Cheyenne Best singled, then scored on a wild pitch. Everett answered the next inning with a run after Chailah Forman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Everet took the lead 2-1 in the f0urth on an ill-advised throw by the Cubs’ defense to second base on a double steal that allowed a run to score.
The Cubs finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Holly Hawkins walked and was pinch-run for by Genyssa McCauley.
Sarah Moquin followed with a single that advanced McCauley to second. McCauley moved up to third on off-target pickoff attempt to first. McCauley beat out the throw home on a DeeAnna Boonstra grounder to knot up the score at 2-2.
Moquin advanced to third and Boonstra to second on the play, bringing up Joneli, who singled up the middle. Moquin scored, but Boonstra was thrown out at the plate on a controversial call as Everett catcher Anna Hudson appeared to block the plate before she had the ball. Hudson blocked the plate so well that Boonstra appeared to never have touched the plate.
Bailey Brewer came up huge in the seventh inning after she gave up a lead off double to Lauren Kesterson, which was followed with an intentional walk to Alexandra Hudson to set up the force at any base. Everett successfully executed the double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. Brewer struck out the next three hitters to close out the win for the Cubs, including a called third strike on the final out.
For the game, Brewer went five innings, striking out nine and walking 4.
Mount Vernon dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Lynnwood and their season came to an end. Lynnwood and Everett are playing in the final match up of the tournament to determine the final State berth from District 1.
