BURLINGTON – Dominating the lines of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, the Burlington-Edison Tigers outscored Sedro-Woolley 38-7 in the season opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 4, webcast live on SkagitRadio.com.

Running backs Mikey Sanchez, Cody Larson and Damon Acoba each scored touchdowns and found big holes opened up by a huge Tigers’ offensive line featuring five seniors from tackle to tackle, while quarterback Dylan Boe connected on 10 of 17 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that could easily have been even better if not for a few dropped passes, two of which appeared to have been potential touchdowns.

Led by junior noseguard Jack Nevitt’s seven tackles, the Burlington-Edison defensive line held Cubs QB Derek Garcia to just 79 yards and 2.9 yards per carry on 27 attempts.   Garcia scored S-W’s touchdown and finished with 162 yards of total offense, completing 11 of 16 passed for 93 yards, eight of those to tight-end Kellen Engberg.

B-E all-state kicker Andrew Furney capped the scoring with a 45 yard field goal and was perfect on five extra-points.

Burlington-Edison will play Sehome next Friday at Civic Field in Bellingham while Sedro-Woolley will also travel to Whatcom County to play Nooksack Valley.

John Fasso and Scot Buchanan will webcast the Tigers vs. Mariners game, with Kris Drake and Jay Alexander calling the Cubs vs. Pioneers game from Everson live here on SkagitRadio.com.  Both pre-game shows are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., with kickoffs to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Week 9 Game Previews

by Wade Tonkin on October 31, 2008

Burlington-Edison Tigers (8-0) at Lynden Lions (6-2), Friday 7pm.
A top playoff seeding out of the 2A Northwest Conference is at stake in this game. The winner will get an extra day of rest before taking on the winner of next Tuesday’s Play-In game. Lynden will throw slants, screens and downfield against the Tigers. It’ll be up to B-E’s secondary to tip passes away or intercept them to control the ball and the clock. Lynden is famous for clock management and methodically managing first downs through the air. The Tigers will try to run the ball past Lynden’s Taylor Creighton, who is on the verge of becoming Lynden’s all-time leader in tackles. Injuries have hit the B-E roster with a number of key players a game-time decision, including Stetson Shearer and Troy O’Neill.

Lynnwood Royals (0-8) at Sedro-Woolley Cubs (4-4) , Thursday 7pm.

The Cubs have found a groove and expect to continue their winning ways against a winless Lynnwood squad. Coach Bryan Alexander has his club believing they can win – and have been recently. The Cubs have worked to manage the clock and ball possession, and more importantly, finding the end zone. Expect the Cubs to play sound, fundamental football for their fifth win of the season.

Mount Vernon Bulldogs (3-5) vs. Ferndale Golden Eagles (8-0) at Civic Field, Thursday 7pm.

The Bulldogs are going up against the #2 3A team in the state on the road. We’d love it if Ferndale would just take it easy on Mount Vernon. Spare the Bulldogs the heaping statistics…

Anacortes Seahawks (0-8) vs. Sehome Mariners (2-6) at Civic Field, Friday 7pm.

The Seahawks have a mix of varsity and junior varsity kids currently on the starting lineups due to multiple injuries. Anacortes’ roster has been devastated, but they go at their opponent week-after-week with whoever is healthy. Sehome’s running game is fronted by Justin Santos. He’s short, he’s fast and he does just as well in track as he does on the football field. It’s hard to find him amongst his blockers, and then – BAM! – he’s downfield. The Seahawks only chance is to contain Santos.

Concrete Lions (7-1) vs. LaConner Braves (1-7), Friday 7pm.

The Braves defense gave Concrete fits in their first matchup in Week 6. It’s always a hard-fought battle between the two small Skagit County schools. This one should be no different. The Lions will utilize their usual studs, and the Braves will need to stop them. Should Concrete win, it would make things easier for the Lions down the road in the playoffs.

Darrington Loggers (6-2) vs. Orcas Island Vikings (3-5), Friday 1:30pm.

The Loggers will need to pull out a win on the island to keep within reach of Concrete for playoff implications. Darrington’s Mike Parris will be up against Orcas Island’s big defensive line. The Vikings might not have enough offensive power to hang with Darrington in this game.

Arlington Eagles (5-3) vs. Stanwood Spartans (2-5), Friday 7pm.

Oh, the Stilly Cup! Can Stanwood’s defense stop Eagle QB Jake Parduhn? Can Stanwood’s offense get past Arlington’s average defense? Is there really a cup that the winner takes back to their school? Do they fill it with river water? Oh well, it’s important to them… Bet on Arlington.

Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks (8-0) vs. Oak Harbor Wildcats (3-5), Friday 7pm.

The #5 Tomahawks have a huge offensive line and quick backs. All they do is run up the gut and it’s up to the other team to stop them. They’re ranked fifth in 4A because nobody CAN stop them. Oak Harbor won’t either.

Week 6 Game Previews

by Wade Tonkin on September 24, 2008

Burlington-Edison (5-0) at Mount Vernon (2-3), 7pm
The 103rd Skagit Bowl features a disciplined team with incredible speed versus a scrappy, capable team with a new coach. Anything can happen between the Tigers and Bulldogs, though the Bulldogs haven’t won this game in four years. That’s why it’s so unpredictable. Both teams are going to play out of their minds.

Mount Baker (2-3) at Sedro-Woolley (2-3), 7pm
If the Tiger/Bulldog rivalry is sometimes called “The Battle of the Bridge,” then this one should be dubbed “The Highway 9 Bowl.” Or not. There needs to be a rivalry between the schools, and there isn’t one. Maybe one will start. Two smash-mouth, run-bashing teams that throw when you least expect it. I think it’s a good idea that this become a rivalry. The Cubs are riding a two-game win streak and they’re at home. Take the Cubs.

La Conner (0-5) at Concrete (4-1), 7pm
The other inter-county game this week features the 2B Lions at home, with their trio of scoring machines, against a big La Conner Braves team, hungry for a win. No better game for the Braves to get your first win against than Concrete. Doubt it’ll happen this year.

Anacortes (0-5) at Bellingham (2-3) Saturday 7pm Civic Field
The Seahawks are in for a rough game against the Red Raiders. If the Anacortes players think they’re banged up before the game, just wait until after. The Red Raiders have a reputation for their extra-curricular nonsense after tackles and in the dogpiles every so often that leave opponents sore or injured. Apparently the Red Radier coaching staff isn’t confident enough in their coaching abilities to play a respectable game. Get the ice ready, Seahawks.

Oak Harbor (2-3) at Stanwood (1-3), 7pm
It’s Stanwood’s Homecoming and this isn’t a week to be distracted when you have to face the Wildcats. Oak Harbor isn’t exactly consistent week after week, so the Spartans might have a chance.
