BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers capitalized on fumbles by South Whidbey on the Falcon’s first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead enroute to a 45-0 blowout victory in the District One 2A high school football conference cross-overs Friday night at Kirkby Field.
Junior halfback Cody Larson’s spectacular 20-yard touchdown run just 85-seconds into the game gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead, and senior halfbacks Mikey Sanchez and Damon Acoba each added short scoring runs to give the Blue and Gold a 21-0 advantage before the first quarter was complete.
Led by the inspired performance of nose guard Jack Nevitt, the Burlington-Edison defense played one of its best games of the season in forcing five Falcon turnovers. The Tiger starters held South Whidbey star running back Henry Mead to just 18 yards on 18 carries. Mead, who entered the game with more than 1400 yards, finished the night with 52 yards on 24 rushes, with nearly two-thirds of those yards coming against the Burlington-Edison junior varsity and third-string defense.
Safety Jeff Hayton returned an interception for a second quarter touchdown, dragging a pair of tacklers with him into the end zone, and sophomore fullback Andy Agen plunged across the goal-line from three yards out to put the Tigers up 35-0 at halftime. Acoba added his second touchdown run of the game late in the third quarter and kicker Andrew Furney drilled a 43-yard fourth quarter field goal to cap the scoring.
With the victory, Burlington-Edison raised its season record to 8-2, while South Whidbey’s season ended with a 4-6 mark. The Tigers will travel across Puget Sound to play Sequim in the state 2A playoffs next Saturday, November 14, and we’ll webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com with John Fasso and Scot Buchanan calling the action.
