EDMONDS – The Mount Vernon Bulldogs lost a heart-breaker 20-19 in overtime to the sixth ranked Meadowdale Mavericks at Edmonds Stadium Friday night.
The Bulldogs gave it everything they had, but came up an extra-point short when all was said and done. Special teams were an issue all night for Mount Vernon who saw two PATs blocked on the night, including the big one in overtime.
The Mount Vernon defense held Naji Moore-Taylor, the top-ranked rusher in 3A WESCO to 86 yards and 1 touchdown on 22 carries. The Bulldogs also harassed Maverick quarterback Danny McDonald into a paltry 7-for-18 for 177 yards and 1 touchdown.
Offensively, the Bulldogs moved the ball well on the ground, with both quarterback Jake Weber-Koetje and running back Joe Barrington breaking the 100-yard barrier on the night. Barrington rushed 20 times for 110 yards and Weber-Koetje carried the ball 27 times for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Turnovers were again an issue for the Bulldogs as Weber-Koetje threw four interceptions on a 6-for-15 passing night.
Credit should go to a resilient Bulldog team who came one point away from upsetting the undefeated Mavericks. Mount Vernon will look to bounce back from the loss this week and will play Sedro-Woolley next Friday night on SkagitRadio.com.
