BURLINGTON – Still stinging from their loss last Friday to Lynden in the Northwest Conference championship game, the Burlington-Edison Tigers are preparing for their District One playoff game at home tonight against South Whidbey.  The Falcons will bring a 5-4 record into Kirkby Field, and are the No. 3 seed from the Cascade Conference.

With a victory this evening, the Tigers will advance into the state tournament’s opening round with a game against Sequim.  With no district playoffs in their league, the Wolves will finish their regular season tonight at Fife before hosting the state playoff game Saturday, November 14 against the winner of the Burlington-Edison vs. South Whidbey game.

While Sequim will be the host school in that contest, the game will likely be played in either Poulsbo or Silverdale, with the location still to be determined.  We’ll update as soon as new information is available.

Looking further ahead, the most likely scenario, should Burlington-Edison advance to the quarter-finals of the 2A State Football Playoffs, would have the Tigers getting a rematch with Lynden at Civic Field in Bellingham Saturday, November 21.

The NWC champion Lions will open at home this Saturday against Squalicum, and with a win would host the District 4 (Olympia area) No. 3 seed in Whatcom County in the first round of the state playoffs.

The only “upset” necessary to allow for a Burlington-Edison vs. Lynden rematch in two weeks would be the  Tigers defeating Sequim – a feat not unheard-of if you remember Burlington-Edison’s win over the unbeaten champion from that same conference (Steilacoom) last year in Tacoma.

We’ll webcast every Burlington-Edison Tigers football playoff game live here on SkagitRadio.com, with John Fasso providing play-by-play and Scot Buchanan adding commentary.  Airtime tonight for the Jerry Smith Kia pre game show is set for 6:20 p.m., with kickoff at 7 pm when the Tigers open the post season hosting South Whidbey.

BURLINGTON – The Lynden Lions showed why they’re the defending state 2A football champions in handing the Tigers their first home loss since August of 2007 with a 20-0 shutout in Northwest Conference 2A high school football action Friday night at Kirkby Field.

The Lions’ offense controlled the ball for nearly twice as long as the Tigers, while Lynden’s defense forced nine Burlington-Edison punts and pressured quarterback Dylan Boe into completing just two of ten passes in his first game back from a broken bone in his throwing hand.  Boe was without his leading receiver, as tight end Jacob Schifferl missed the game with an illness.

Lopez Santaigo opened the scoring with 11 seconds left in the first quarter when he kicked a 22-yard field goal and Lions’ quarterback Jordan Hastings sandwiched a pair of short touchdown runs around a Santiago 24-yard field goal as Lynden (8-1 overall, 7-0 NWC) clinched its second consecutive Northwest Conference 2A championship.

Burlington-Edison (7-2, 5-2) finished second in the conference and will host the South Whidbey Falcons in the District One playoffs next Friday at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the round of 16 in the W.I.A.A. state playoffs.

SkagitRadio.com will webcast the South Whidbey at Burlington-Edison game Friday, November 6, with John Fasso providing play-by-play and Scot Buchanan adding commentary. Airtime for the Jerry Smith Kia pregame show is set for 6:20 p.m., with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
