SEDRO WOOLLEY - The Mount Vernon Bulldogs boys’ basketball team rode a roller coaster in the Sedro-Woolley gym Friday night in a Northwest Conference 3A matchup, eventually coming to rest with a 60-45 victory over the upstart Cubs.

Sedro-Woolley led 8-6 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs exploded for 22 points in the second period to take an 11-point lead into halftime. The Cubs battled back by holding Mount Vernon to just eight third quarter points, and the game was tied at 36 early in the fourth quarter.

Mount Vernon hit the gas pedal again to break the tie score and outscored Sedro Woolley by 15 points down the stretch to earn the victory. The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by Jake Weber-Koetje’s 15 points.  Kelsey Leek added 14 points, while Dan Barnet and Chris Chaplin each scored 10 points for Mount Vernon, as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 with the victory.

Sophomore Isaac Bianchini had 17 points to lead Sedro Woolley, while fellow sophomore Andrew Minkel also had a strong performance and ended the night with 10 points before fouling out with 4:14 to go in the game. The Cubs fell to 0-6 with the loss, but will have one more shot at victory before Christmas when they host LaConner on Tuesday.

Mount Vernon won’t be back in action until December 30th when they will play at South Whidbey. Our next webcast of Bulldog basketball is scheduled for January 2nd, when Mount Vernon will host Marysville-Pilchuck.

MOUNT VERNON – Burlington-Edison’s combination of powerful offense, great defense, and shutout pitching was too much for Mount Vernon, as the Tigers clinched the Northwest Conference title with a 10-0 win over the Bulldogs Friday afternoon at Sherman Anderson field.

Led by Ian Capron’s 3-for-3 and Dylan Boe’s 2-for-3, with each ripping a pair of doubles, the Tigers collected 11 hits in six innings, as the game was shortened by the 10-run rule.  Chris Vivanco joined the B-E hit parade by going 2-for-3 with a double, while Quinn Holt scored three times, stole a base, and added an RBI.

Ian Capron allowed six hits over five innings to earn the win and raise his record to 3-1, and along with his pair of doubles, he also had three RBI and scored twice during Burlington-Edison’s ninth straight win.

After loading the bases in both the second and third innings, the Bulldogs did it again in the sixth when they were stymied by an outstanding play by the Tigers’ defense. Right fielder Quinn Holt gloved a one-hopper and fired a perfect one-hop strike to catcher Boe, who stretched like a first-baseman to get the forceout at home.  Two of Mount Vernon’s final three outs were made by runners thrown-out at the plate.

With his offense stranding 11 base runners, Mount Vernon’s Dayton Huizinga suffered the loss, but did strike out seven in six innings.  Catcher Kelsey Leek led the Bulldogs’ offense by going 2-for-3 with a double.

The Bulldogs fell to 9-9 overall, 8-6 in NWC games.  The Tigers won for the 11th time in 12 conference games and are 16-2 this season.

It was the second time in a week the Bulldogs beat the Cubs by the same 1-0 score.

Kelsey Leek led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice ground-out by T.J. Wright before Hayes drilled a 2-2 pitch to left-center field to score Leek.

Dan Barnet picked up his fourth win on the mound for Mount Vernon, while Travis Serna – last week’s 3-2 winner for the Cubs – takes the loss.

Mount Vernon goes to 8-5 in conference, 9-8 overall. Sedro-Woolley drops to 6-6 in conference and 6-11 overall.

Kris Drake webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com and will have play by play of Burlington-Edison visiting Mount Vernon this Friday, May 1 in NWC baseball.
