BLAINE – Caleb Statham is the main reason why the Blaine Borderites remain in the playoff football picture of the 2A Northwest Conference. Friday night, on his home field, in the driving rain and wind, Statham took it upon himself to charge into the endzone three times while leading Blaine to a 35-0 Senior Night win over the winless Sehome Mariners.

Statham found the endzone the first time in less than two minutes into the game by slipping through the arms of would-be tacklers and making insane cutbacks on the Mariner secondary who gave chase on his 68-yard touchdown run.

David Craig got the nod to carry the ball across the goal line for Blaine from three yards out after the Borderites started their second offensive series in Sehome territory. Keith Sentkowski’s extra point was low, leaving Blaine’s lead at 13 points.

Statham’s second score was a one-yard plunge at the end of the first quarter. Blaine quarterback Jordan McCarty whipped the two-point conversion pass to Todd Bird out of his left side flanker position, giving the Borderites a 21-0 lead.

Middway through the second stanza, Statham struck again on an 18-yard scamper around left end, and McCarty found paydirt on a quarterback keeper in the third quarter.

Blaine wideout Trevor Chau set a Blaine school record for receiving yardage on a 13-yard reception from McCarty in the first quarter.

Blaine maintains a playoff spot in third place among 2A Northwest Conference teams with a 4-2 record, along with Squalicum. Mount Baker is hanging on to playoff hopes with a 3-3 record.

BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers positioned themselves for a possible league championship showdown with Lynden in two weeks by defeating Blaine 31-28 in Northwest Conference 2A football action Friday night at Kirkby Field.  The second half was played in a steady rain that affected the footing and ball handling for both teams.

Trailing by seven points following Blaine’s five-yard touchdown pass from Jordan McCarty to Todd Bird,  junior halfback Cody Larson sprinted 44 yards for Burlington-Edison’s first touchdown to ignite a 24-point second quarter and senior halfback Mikey Sanchez capped the scoring with a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Senior Achilles Wynn had a big night for the Tigers, scoring on a 19-yard run and 97-yard kickoff return. All state kicker Andrew Furney remained perfect for the season with four more extra points while adding a 28-yard field goal.

The victory gave the Tigers sole possession of second place in 2A Northwest Conference games with a 4-1 record (6-1 overall).  Blaine fell to 3-2 in conference, 4-3 overall.

The play-by-play voice of the Tigers, John Fasso, was joined on our webcast by Jay Alexander and Skagit Valley Herald sportswriter Eric Francis.  Scot Buchanan had the night off in order to attend the University of Washington Huskies game in Arizona and will return for our webcast Friday night when Burlington-Edison travels to Mt. Baker.
