BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers capitalized on fumbles by South Whidbey on the Falcon’s first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead enroute to a 45-0 blowout victory in the District One 2A high school football conference cross-overs Friday night at Kirkby Field.

Junior halfback Cody Larson’s spectacular 20-yard touchdown run just 85-seconds into the game gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead, and senior halfbacks Mikey Sanchez and Damon Acoba each added short scoring runs to give the Blue and Gold a 21-0 advantage before the first quarter was complete.

Led by the inspired performance of nose guard Jack Nevitt, the Burlington-Edison defense played one of its best games of the season in forcing five Falcon turnovers. The Tiger starters held South Whidbey star running back Henry Mead to just 18 yards on 18 carries.  Mead, who entered the game with more than 1400 yards, finished the night with 52 yards on 24 rushes, with nearly two-thirds of those yards coming against the Burlington-Edison junior varsity and third-string defense.

Safety Jeff Hayton returned an interception for a second quarter touchdown, dragging a pair of tacklers with him into the end zone, and sophomore fullback Andy Agen plunged across the goal-line from three yards out to put the Tigers up 35-0 at halftime. Acoba added his second touchdown run of the game late in the third quarter and kicker Andrew Furney drilled a 43-yard fourth quarter field goal to cap the scoring.

With the victory, Burlington-Edison raised its season record to 8-2, while South Whidbey’s season ended with a 4-6 mark. The Tigers will travel across Puget Sound to play Sequim in the state 2A playoffs next Saturday, November 14, and we’ll webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com with John Fasso and Scot Buchanan calling the action.

Scots dunk Tigers 63-51

by admin on December 31, 2008

The Shorecrest Scots outlasted the Burlington-Edison Tigers 63-51 in a fast-paced non-conference boys basketball game in Shoreline Tuesday night. The Scots passing and shooting from outside the three-point range proved to be the difference.

Shorecrest managed to whip the ball outside for long range scoring if they couldn’t score from underneath. The Tigers were tested with Shorecrest’s spread-offense to control the clock and the ball, where the Scots scored 18 points while holding Burlingt0n-Edison to 8 points in the second quarter. Sophomore junior varsity quarterback Dylan Boe stepped up in a big way Thursday night by leading the Burlington-Edison Tiger “varsity” team to a 39-8 win over the Bellingham Red Raiders in 2A Northwest Conference football action at Bellingham’s Civic Field.

Boe, fresh off a similar win with the Tiger JV squad earlier in the week, added a much-needed passing game to the Tiger’s offense, completing 9-of-14 passes for 162 yards including a 41-yard strike right into the outstretched hands of Achilles Wynn as he crossed the goal line in the third quarter. Boe also opened up the scoring in the first with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Stetson Shearer scored on offense, defense and added a two-point conversion after Boe’s early score. Shearer picked off Bellingham’s Jeremy Rick in the first quarter on a third-and-long, returning the interception down the sidelines to the front left pylon of the end zone for the Tiger’s second touchdown. Shearer also punched in from the 2-yard line on Burlington-Edison’s fifth possession – a five play, 75 yard drive in the second quarter.

Tiger kicker Andrew Furney was 4-for-4 in PATs and also booted a 33-yard field goal just before halftime to give the Tigers a 25-8 lead. Junior running back Damon Acoba added a 3-yard touchdown run with 5:22 left in the game for Burlington-Edison to round out the scoring.

Burlington-Edison’s defense picked off Rick four times in the first half – two by Shearer, one by Jacob Bates and another by junior safety Jeff Hayton. The Tigers held Bellingham to 233 total offensive yards to their own 271.
