BURLINGTON – With eight of 14 matches resulting in wins-by-fall, the host Burlington-Edison Tiger boys’ wrestling team defeated the Sedro-Woolley Cubs Wednesday night 42-33 in the annual dual meet between two of the state’s powerhouse programs.
The match of the night was at 215 pounds, where Sedro-Woolley’s Joe Janicki fought for a late third round reversal on Burlington-Edison’s Chad Studebaker, tying the score at 4-4 and sending the bout into overtime.
In overtime, Studebaker was the aggressor early, as Janicki fought off Studebaker’s single-leg takedown attempts, but the Cubs’ 215-pounder summoned all the strength he had left after nearly eight minutes of grappling to score his own single-leg takedown for the overtime win.

BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers capitalized on fumbles by South Whidbey on the Falcon’s first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead enroute to a 45-0 blowout victory in the District One 2A high school football conference cross-overs Friday night at Kirkby Field.
Junior halfback Cody Larson’s spectacular 20-yard touchdown run just 85-seconds into the game gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead, and senior halfbacks Mikey Sanchez and Damon Acoba each added short scoring runs to give the Blue and Gold a 21-0 advantage before the first quarter was complete.
Led by the inspired performance of nose guard Jack Nevitt, the Burlington-Edison defense played one of its best games of the season in forcing five Falcon turnovers. The Tiger starters held South Whidbey star running back Henry Mead to just 18 yards on 18 carries. Mead, who entered the game with more than 1400 yards, finished the night with 52 yards on 24 rushes, with nearly two-thirds of those yards coming against the Burlington-Edison junior varsity and third-string defense.
Safety Jeff Hayton returned an interception for a second quarter touchdown, dragging a pair of tacklers with him into the end zone, and sophomore fullback Andy Agen plunged across the goal-line from three yards out to put the Tigers up 35-0 at halftime. Acoba added his second touchdown run of the game late in the third quarter and kicker Andrew Furney drilled a 43-yard fourth quarter field goal to cap the scoring.
With the victory, Burlington-Edison raised its season record to 8-2, while South Whidbey’s season ended with a 4-6 mark. The Tigers will travel across Puget Sound to play Sequim in the state 2A playoffs next Saturday, November 14, and we’ll webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com with John Fasso and Scot Buchanan calling the action.

BURLINGTON – Dominating the lines of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, the Burlington-Edison Tigers outscored Sedro-Woolley 38-7 in the season opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 4, webcast live on SkagitRadio.com.
Running backs Mikey Sanchez, Cody Larson and Damon Acoba each scored touchdowns and found big holes opened up by a huge Tigers’ offensive line featuring five seniors from tackle to tackle, while quarterback Dylan Boe connected on 10 of 17 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that could easily have been even better if not for a few dropped passes, two of which appeared to have been potential touchdowns.
Led by junior noseguard Jack Nevitt’s seven tackles, the Burlington-Edison defensive line held Cubs QB Derek Garcia to just 79 yards and 2.9 yards per carry on 27 attempts. Garcia scored S-W’s touchdown and finished with 162 yards of total offense, completing 11 of 16 passed for 93 yards, eight of those to tight-end Kellen Engberg.
B-E all-state kicker Andrew Furney capped the scoring with a 45 yard field goal and was perfect on five extra-points.
Burlington-Edison will play Sehome next Friday at Civic Field in Bellingham while Sedro-Woolley will also travel to Whatcom County to play Nooksack Valley.
John Fasso and Scot Buchanan will webcast the Tigers vs. Mariners game, with Kris Drake and Jay Alexander calling the Cubs vs. Pioneers game from Everson live here on SkagitRadio.com. Both pre-game shows are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., with kickoffs to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Stumbling conjures up images of Dick Van Dyke entering his home during the intro of his old television show. Bumbling? That’d be Jim Carrey. Rumbling…as of Friday night’s Northwest Conference 47-6 victory for the Burlington-Edison Tigers over the Sehome Mariners, that belongs to Cole Sager.
Actually, he owned all three. He stumbled, bumbled and rumbled for three touchdown runs. The first, a 36 yard run in the second quarter, then a five yard run just before the end of the first half, and a jaw-dropping 70 yard touchdown effort to begin the second half.
Sager took Tiger quarterback Troy O’Neill’s handoff, bounced off multiple would-be tacklers at the line of scrimmage, spun, cut through a pair of Sehome linebackers, kept his balance with his free hand, stiff armed a cornerback, kept his balance with his free hand, stumbled, dipped his shoulder into a safety, bumbled, kept his balance with his free hand, then rumbled for the remaining 20 yards to the end zone for his third and final touchdown of the game. Sager ended the game with eight carries for 165 yards rushing.
O’Neill added a pair of short yardage touchdowns of his own late in the game for Burlington-Edison.
The Tiger defense intercepted Sehome quarterback Sam Reier three times – the first, returned 64 yards for a touchdown by Stetson Shearer late in the first quarter.
Tiger kicker Andrew Furney kicked field goals of 26 and 27 yards in the second quarter.
Nose guard Jack Nevitt, a rare sophomore starter for the Tigers, played outstanding defense for Burlington-Edison, making numerous solo tackles and holding Sehome rushing attempts up the middle to short gains and loss of yardage.
Luke Thomas took advantage of great special teams blocking to return a pair of punts around end, setting up Burlington-Edison’s offense deep in Sehome territory. Both possessions resulted in Tiger touchdowns.
