BURLINGTON – Two streaks in which they outscored arch rival Mount Vernon 19-0 propelled Burlington-Edison to a 61-38 blowout of the Bulldogs in girl’s high school basketball.

With their aggressive defense setting the tempo, the Tigers limited Mount Vernon to six second quarter points and 14 in the first half, sealing the Bulldogs’ fate by the end of the third period when they led 45-23.

Mister T’s Awards and Embroidery player of the game Brenna Anderson led the Tigers’ third quarter assault with eight of her 16 points, tying for game scoring honors with teammate Cambie Edwards. Point guard Kristine Thoe spearheaded the Burlington-Edison attack with nine first half points on her way to scoring 15.

Mount Vernon’s Mandy Barnet scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs, who suffered their third loss in four games this season. Burlington-Edison head into the holidays undefeated in four games.  The Tigers will return to action December 29 when they’ll face their toughest test of the season thus far, visiting 4-1  Shorecrest.

be-tigersYAKIMA – The Burlington-Edison Tigers last second shot bounced off the rim to the left – a bounce that was indicative of how the shots of the Tiger girls’ basketball team fell in their 2A state tournament loser-out game against the Othello Huskies, as Othello advanced in the consolation bracket with a 37-36 win.

Brenna Anderson led the Tigers with eight points while Virginia Brown and Nichole Arndt each added seven points.

Burlington-Edison had no answer on defense for Othello’s Kylee Mollotte’s ability to lob the ball inside to the double, often triple-covered Allison Walker, who scored 17 points.  Walker was able to outjump Tiger defenders for high lob passes down low to score off the backboard. The Huskies were fouled underneath repeatedly, but were only able to convert 8-of-15 from the line.

Burlington-Edison ended another terrific season with a record of 17-9 and will lose only one senior, Sarah Stewart, who played stellar defense against Othello and added four points in defeat.

be-tigersBELLINGHAM – The Burlington-Edison girls’ tough interior defense and a great performance in crunch time from Brenna Anderson and Kristine Thoe led to a 49-45 double overtime win over their rival Anacortes Seahawks at the district one tournament at Squalicum High School in Bellingham.

Kristine Thoe scored 12 points, including all four B-E points in the second overtime, Brenna Anderson scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds, and Virginia Brown added five points and nine rebounds for the Tigers.

Returning from an injury, Stewart – Burlington-Edison’s lone senior, added six rebounds and three blocked shot for the Tigers and a key bucket that sent the game into the second overtime period.

Anacortes was led by Kimberly Herrigstad, who scored a game high 16 points, and Hayley Rieger chipped in  nine points for the Seahawks.

The victory clinched a state berth for the Tigers (16-7) and sends them to the third-place district tournament game Saturday at 6:00 PM against the Bellingham Red Raiders.
