District One 3A Tournament

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs came up with two runs in the sixth from the bottom half of their order and Bailey Brewer overcame a lead off double in the seventh to strike out three batters to advance to next weekend’s State 3A Tournament in Tacoma with a 3-2 win over the Everett Gulls of the 3A Western Conference.

Brewer struck out 11 in five innings of work despite struggling with her control at times. She walked four, allowed one run and two hits.

Sedro-Woolley picked up their initial run in the first when lead off hitter Cheyenne Best singled, then scored on a wild pitch. Everett answered the next inning with a run after Chailah Forman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Everet took the lead 2-1 in the f0urth on an ill-advised throw by the Cubs’ defense to second base on a double steal that allowed a run to score.

The Cubs  finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when  Holly Hawkins walked and was pinch-run for by Genyssa McCauley.

Sarah Moquin followed with a single that advanced McCauley to second.  McCauley moved up to third on off-target pickoff attempt to first. McCauley beat out the throw home on a DeeAnna Boonstra grounder to knot up the score at 2-2.

Moquin advanced to third and Boonstra to second on the play, bringing up Joneli, who singled up the middle. Moquin scored, but Boonstra was thrown out at the plate on a controversial call as Everett catcher Anna Hudson appeared to block  the plate before she had the ball. Hudson blocked the plate so well that Boonstra appeared to never have touched the plate.

Bailey Brewer came up huge in the seventh inning after she gave up a lead off double to Lauren Kesterson, which was followed with an intentional walk to Alexandra Hudson to set up the force at any base. Everett successfully executed the double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Brewer struck out the next three hitters to close out the win for the Cubs, including a called third strike on the final out.

For the game, Brewer went five innings, striking out nine and walking 4.

Mount Vernon dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Lynnwood and their season came to an end.  Lynnwood and Everett are playing in the final match up of the tournament to determine the final State berth from District 1.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Bailey Brewer struck out 10 Bulldogs and allowed only two hits as the Sedro-Woolley Cubs advanced to the District One 3A Title Game. Offensively, the Cubs were paced by Bailey Bartelt who went 2-for-3 including with a two-run single in the fourth. Sarah Moquin also went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the fifth to account for the Cubs’ scoring.

The Bulldogs only offensive tally came in the sixth when Ally Kutz led off with a double, stole second and scored on a ground ball to second by Devin Hiltz.

The Cubs flashed some leather as well with a spectacular defensive play in the fourth when after a one out walk, Kiersten Anderson tried to advance to third on a well-executed bunt by Mount Vernon’s Alicia Fine.  Cubs’ first baseman Holly Hawkins fielded the bunt down the first base line and made an alert throw to Sarah Moquin at third base, who tagged Anderson out on a close play.  The Cubs turned in an error-free game.

The Bulldogs hopes are still alive as they will face the Ferndale Golden Eagles (12-10)  the two seed from the Northwest Conference in a loser out game Thursday afternoon.

Next up for the Cubs will be the Everett Gulls (13-9,) the No. 3 seed out of the Western Conference. The winner advances to the State Tournament, while the loser drops to the Consolation bracket and has to win two more games to advance.

We’ll have that game for you right here on SkagitRadio.com at 11:00 on Saturday with pregame at 10:45 with Wade Tonkin and Ed Eliason.
