DEMING – Big plays by both teams highlighted Burlington-Edison’s 41-21 victory over Mount Baker Friday night in Northwest Conference high school football action.

The Tigers fell behind early for the fourth time in eight games this season after the Mountaineers recovered a fumble of the opening kickoff and David Kashubin capped the Mount Baker drive with a 14-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Mountaineer lead.

Burlington-Edison wasted little time responding when Cody Larson sprinted 68 yards for the game-tying touchdown just 50 seconds after the Mount Baker score for the first of 17 unanswered points. Damon Acoba’s 12-yard scoring run and the first of two Andrew Furney field goals gave the Tigers a 17-7 lead late in the first half, but Nick Jacoby pulled the Mountaineers to within three points at the intermission on a 58-yard punt return just before halftime to make the score 17-14.

The big plays continued in the third period when Burlington-Edison’s Mikey Sanchez followed a wall of blockers to the endzone on a 62-yard punt return and Larson took a Chris Burt pass 41 yards for a score to give the Tigers a 31-14 lead after three quarters.

Furney kicked a 43-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Sanchez capped the Tigers’ scoring with a 66-yard touchdown sprint to put Burlington-Edison on top 41-14 before Mount Baker quarterback Zac Lepper connected with Tim Breaux on a 60-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring.

The Burlington-Edison victory sets up a showdown between the Tigers (7-1, 5-1) and Lynden Lions (7-1, 6-0) for the Northwest Conference title next Friday at Burlington’s Kirkby field.  Despite the loss, Mount Baker (4-4, 3-3) clinched a post-season berth as the fifth place team in the conference and will play the fourth place team from the Cascade Conference in a play-in game.

DEMING – It took overtime for the Mount Baker Mountaineers to win their homecoming game 23-20 over the Sedro-Woolley Cubs in a battle of 3-2 NWC high school football teams.

Jose Mata, who kicked a Mount Baker school record 40-yard field goal in their 53-0 blowout of Sehome last week, kicked a game-winning 25-yard field goal on overtime to seal the homecoming victory after the Mounties plowed through the Sedro-Woolley defense to set up the winning kick.

Ian O’Brien charged through the left side of his offensive line from four yards out to tie the game at 20 at the 3:37 mark in the fourth quarter. The extra point by Joe Janicki was just outside the right upright and after regulation the game was tied at 20 points apiece.

Sedro-Woolley scored first on a one-yard touchdown run by Clayton Johnson in the first quarter.

Mount Baker scored in the second quarter on a 43-yard touchdown strike from Zak Lepper to wideout Logan Packard, who hauled the long pass into his fingertips in stride.

O’Brien scored his first touchdown in the third quarter from 11 yards out by scampering and cutting his way between the outstretched arms of Mount Baker defenders.

The Mountaineers lone running back, David Kashubin, who was limited to only 67 yards rushing in this game, trucked in from 14 yards away for his eighth touchdown of the season. And as the third quarter ended, Lepper connected with Packard again for an 11-yard strike into the corner of the endzone to put Mount Baker up 20-14 after three quarters. The extra point by Mata was blocked by the Cubs Ian O’Brien.

O’Brien led all rushers with 16 carries for 121 yards.

Lepper was 16-for-29 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Mount Baker improves to 4-2 while Sedro-Woolley evens out to 3-3.
