BURLINGTON – Trailing by two late in the second quarter, the Burlington-Edison Tigers scored the final nine points of the first half and never looked back en route to a 68-48 victory over Shorecrest Tuesday night in boys’ high school basketball.

In a game featuring two of the top teams in the state, it was the aggressive and relentless defense played by Tiger coach Rick Skeen’s team that turned a seesaw first half into another double-digit Burlington-Edison win, their fifth in six games this season.

After an exciting first half that featured 12 lead changes and five ties before Burlington-Edison’s late run, the Tigers limited the Scots to just nine third-quarter points and eight points in the final eight minutes. Evan Coulter’s 21 points led three Tigers in double figures scoring, with Colin Stewart adding 13 points and Craig Babington scoring 10.

Burlington-Edison’s Jacob Schifferl was chosen by announcers Fred Lee and John Fasso as the Mister T’s Awards and Embroidery player of the game after keying the Tigers’ run at the end of the second quarter when he scored seven of his nine points and grabbed numerous rebounds.

The Tigers will host Anacortes Tuesday, Jan 5 in a girls’ and boys’ basketball doubleheader, with the Seahawks and Burlington-Edison girls scheduled to tip off at 6 pm and the boys to follow at 8 pm. We’ll webcast both of those games live here on SkagitRadio.com.

MOUNT VERNON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers raised their season record to 4-1 while handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season with a 62-46 victory over their arch rivals Tuesday night in front of a an excited and vocal crowd at Mount Vernon High School.

One of the premier players in the state at his position, senior guard Evan Coulter led the Tigers’ steady offensive attack with 25 points, while Colin Stewart (11 points) and Craig Babington (10 points) also reached double digits for Burlington-Edison.

Babington returned to the Tigers’ starting line-up for the first time since suffering an ankle injury just 14 seconds into the Tigers season opening game two weeks ago at Sedro-Woolley.

Mount Vernon senior forward Dan Barnet hustled his way to a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 15 rebounds for the Bulldogs.  Kelsey Leek led a balanced Mount Vernon attack with 13 points, while Chris Chaplin and Jake Weber-Koetje added 11 points each.

Burlington-Edison will have two weeks before returning to action December 29th when they’ll host Shorecrest in a game to be webcast live on SkagitRadio.com. Fred Lee will be joined by John Fasso as the two veteran announcers will work together for the first time this century.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Looking a lot like the same team that blew through three state tournament opponents last year on their way to a second place trophy, the Burlington-Edison Tigers sprinted to an early 10-1 lead on their way to overpowering Sedro-Woolley 92-37 Saturday night in boys’ high school basketball.

The game was a reflection of the current overall state of both schools’ programs, as Burlington-Edison is in the midst of possibly the best run of teams in school history, with consecutive appearances in the state championship game, while the inexperienced Cubs are in the second year of a rebuilding process.

Starting five seniors, including one of the state’s premier point guards in Evan Coulter, the Tigers showed rare season-opening poise in overcoming an injury to senior guard Craig Babington just 14-seconds into the game.  Babington sustained a sprain to his left ankle that was described as a level one, which usually require 7-10 days to heal.

With Coulter scoring 32 points and Colin Stewart adding 19 to lead four Tigers in double figures, and Burlington-Edison’s pressure defense forcing an unofficial 17 first-half turnovers, coach Rick Skeen’s team had sealed the fate of Sedro-Woolley by halftime when they led 43-11.

“We played a little short-handed”, said Skeen in referring not only to Babington’s ankle sprain but also to the absence of potential starters Jacob Schifferl and Eric Walser, “I thought the guys who were out there played really hard.”

To Sedro-Woolley’s credit, the Cubs hustled to the final buzzer and gave a glimpse of their potential in the third quarter when they played the powerful Tigers even until Coulter’s three-point buzzer beater gave Burlington-Edison an 18-15 advantage in the period.

The Tigers’ aggressive and sometimes smothering defense held Levi Stewart to just seven points after the Sedro-Woolley senior had averaged more than 20 in the Cubs’ first two games of the season.  Stewart and Kellen Engberg are the only seniors seeing significant playing time for  the Cubs, who were led by sophomore Isaac Bianchini’s 15 points.

YAKIMA – The Squalicum Storm continued their incredible winning streak through to the 2A boys’ basketball championship game at the SunDome, dominating as the #1 2A team and defeating the Burlington-Edison Tigers 60-49 Saturday night, a repeat of the District One title game.

Squalicum’s last loss was a 79-50 Mater Dei victory (the #1 team in the nation out of Southern California) during a Christmas break tournament, but the Storm returned home to win 18 consecutive games before cutting the nets down in Yakima.

Tournament MVP Keith Stackhouse knocked down 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and passed off four assists for the Storm. Patrick Voeut led Squalicum with 16 points in the title game. Kyle Hooper chipped in 13 and Derek Dickerson also had 11 for the Storm.

The Tigers started the game missing their first seven attempts from the field. Down nine points in the first four minutes, Burlington-Edison had to play catch-up the rest of the game, trailing 21-6 after one, 36-20 at halftime, but got to within ten after the third quarter 47-37.

Burlington-Edison’s Colin Stewart led the Tigers with 15 points while Evan Coulter added nine. Coulter had been scoring over 20 points in the three previous tournament games, returning the Tigers to the championship game for the second straight season.

Of the four games Squalicum played leading up to the title contest, the point spread was much tighter against Burlingt0n-Edison compared to the prior Storm opponents, which was a testament to the Tigers’ defensive game. The only factor of Squalicum’s game the Tigers could not stop was the sneaky Patrick Voeut’s shooting (6-of-9, 2-of-3 for 3-pointers).

Ian Capron, the lone Tiger senior, caps his basketball career with the Blue and Gold by being named to the 2A All-Tournament second team for his outstanding rebounding prowess. Evan Coulter was named to the All-Tournament first team while averaging over 20 points per game.

Stackhouse and Dickerson were also named to the first team from Squalicum, with Voeut named to the second team.

In the girls’ championship game, it was also a repeat of the District One title game, but the results switched as the Lynden Lions upset the #1 ranked Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 48-41 for the 2A trophy.

Boys’ placings: First place, Squalicum over Burlington-Edison 60-49. Third place, River Ridge over (6th) Fife 49-40. Fifth place, North Mason over (8th) Quincy 54-36. Fourth place, Clarkston over (7th) Toppenish 65-51.

Girls’ placings: First place, Lynden over Archbishop Murphy 48-41. Third place, West Valley-Spokane over (6th) Prosser 63-49. Fifth place, Othello over (8th) Pullman 62-55. Fourth place, Elma over (7th) Ellensburg 52-46.

be-tigersYAKIMA – Evan Coulter used Tumwater’s lane like an employee-of-the-month parking space, gliding into it often and uncontested to put up 18 points to lead the Burlington-Edison Tigers to an opening round 80-41 blowout of the Tumwater Thunderbirds at the 2A boys’ basketball state tournament Wednesday night.

Colin Stewart contributed 15 points and even better defense for the Tigers, swiping the ball three times. Stewart was also 6-of-7 from the line. Craig Babington added 14 points for Burlington-Edison.

The Tigers pulled down 40 total rebounds (14 offense, 26 defense) to Tumwater’s 27. The Thunderbirds’ offensive threat was heavily compromised by Burlington-Edison’s steady defense. Tumwater shot a miserable 15-for-50 (30%), in marked contrast to the Tigers’ 32-for-59 (54%), which included 13-for-16 (81%) shooting in the third quarter.

The Tigers will next face the Clarkston Bantams – the District 7 #1 – Thursday night at 9 p.m. and the game will be webcast live here on SkagitRadio.com.

Scots dunk Tigers 63-51

December 31, 2008

The Shorecrest Scots outlasted the Burlington-Edison Tigers 63-51 in a fast-paced non-conference boys basketball game in Shoreline Tuesday night. The Scots passing and shooting from outside the three-point range proved to be the difference.
Shorecrest managed to whip the ball outside for long range scoring if they couldn’t score from underneath. The Tigers were tested with [...]
