B-E Tigers fend off S-W Cubs 42-33

by admin on December 9, 2009

BURLINGTON – With eight of 14 matches resulting in wins-by-fall, the host Burlington-Edison Tiger boys’ wrestling team defeated the Sedro-Woolley Cubs Wednesday night 42-33 in the annual dual meet between two of the state’s powerhouse programs.

The match of the night was at 215 pounds, where Sedro-Woolley’s Joe Janicki fought for a late third round reversal on Burlington-Edison’s Chad Studebaker, tying the score at 4-4 and sending the bout into overtime.

In overtime, Studebaker was the aggressor early, as Janicki fought off Studebaker’s single-leg takedown attempts, but the Cubs’ 215-pounder summoned all the strength he had left after nearly eight minutes of grappling to score his own single-leg takedown for the overtime win.

Orem, UT -  Sedro-Woolley’s Derek Garcia capped a dominating performance at the Rocky Mountian Rumble tournament in Utah with a championship match pin in 1:59, leading the Cubs to a ninth place finish in the 64 team event considered to be one of the toughest in the Western U.S.

Garcia won four of his six tournament matches by fall while raising his season record to 28-0.  In a championship matchup of the top-two seeds at 152 pounds, Garcia, a two-time state champion, pinned second-seed Cody Miller of Deer Park, who is the defending 152 pound Washington State 2A champion.

Cubs’ 130 pounder Shane Hunt fell one win short of a title, losing the championship match to second seed Derek Peterson from tournament team champion Delta HS (Utah) by a 14-4 technical fall.   Hunt, who was seeded fourth, upset top seed and two-time Utah state champion Kade Moss 8-4 in the semi-finals.

SW’s Cody Pohren finished fourth at 171 pounds after a 14-3 major decision defeat to Derek Miller from Riverton, Wyoming in the consolation final.
