Girls – The Mount Baker Mountaineers rode a 25-point night from Jovanna Baisden to a 61-35 win over the Blaine Borderites in Northwest Conference girls’ basketball action on Friday night in Blaine.

Baisden drained seven three-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Mounties. Eight different Mountaineers got into the scoring act as Taylor Coston chipped in 11 points and yanked down nine rebounds. Overall, a great team effort was put forth by Head Coach Brenda Ellis’ Mount Baker team. Baisden earned the “Web Star of the Game” honors with her 25 points.

The Baker Girls improved their record to 3-2. Blaine dropped to 1-4.

Boys: The Mount Baker boys got balanced scoring with three players in double figures in their 61-54 win over Blaine in the second game of the double-header.

Spencer Backstrom and Anderson Bass log rolled the Borderites with both scoring 13 points each for Mount Baker. Nick Jacoby added 10 for the physical and unselfish Mountaineers and Jacob Kernells brought down nine rebounds as well for the Mounties.

Mount Baker withstood a scoring barrage by the Borderites’ Trey Bakageorge, who knocked down five three-pointers on his way to 25 points and taking game high honors. Ultimately it was Blaine’s inability to effectively manage the shot clock, settling for too many early looks as the Mounties used their size advantage to dominate the glass .

The Baker Boys moved to 4-0 – one of their better starts in recent memory. The Borderites dropped to 2-2 on the season.

TUMWATER – W. F. West quarterback Ben Ternan threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two more as the Bearcats put a stop to Blaine’s bid for a lengthy playoff run with a 38-20 opening round WIAA 2A state football tournament win Saturday night.

Ternan and the Bearcats wasted no time putting the Borderites on their heels, as Ternan found sophomore wide receiver Mitch Gueller open in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Bearcats a quick 7-0 lead at the 10:49 mark of the first quarter.

It was clear from the start that the undefeated Black Hills League Champion Bearcats from Chehalis would be a difficult matchup for the scrappy Borderites all afternoon. Minutes after their first score, W. F. West found themselves with great field position and increased their lead to 14-0 as Ternan scored on a six-yard run.

Blaine responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive, highlighted by a 60-yard run by Northwest Conference rushing leader Caleb Statham to close the gap to seven points, giving Blaine fans some hope, albeit short lived.

Ternan found Gueller open again in the closing moments of the first quarter, giving the Bearcats a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At halftime, the Borderites trailed only 21-14 after tight end Al Bohnson went airborne in the end zone on a touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan McCarty.

The Bearcats sealed the deal quickly with 14 third quarter points and a 21-point lead. Ternan and his talented wide receivers Eric Forgione and Mitch Gueller were too much for the Borderites on this cold afternoon in Tumwater.

Caleb Statham rushed 21 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns for Blaine in his final game as a Borderite.

Ternan was 12-of-21 through the air for two touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 97 yards, including a dazzling 47-yard scamper in the third.

BLAINE – Caleb Statham is the main reason why the Blaine Borderites remain in the playoff football picture of the 2A Northwest Conference. Friday night, on his home field, in the driving rain and wind, Statham took it upon himself to charge into the endzone three times while leading Blaine to a 35-0 Senior Night win over the winless Sehome Mariners.

Statham found the endzone the first time in less than two minutes into the game by slipping through the arms of would-be tacklers and making insane cutbacks on the Mariner secondary who gave chase on his 68-yard touchdown run.

David Craig got the nod to carry the ball across the goal line for Blaine from three yards out after the Borderites started their second offensive series in Sehome territory. Keith Sentkowski’s extra point was low, leaving Blaine’s lead at 13 points.

Statham’s second score was a one-yard plunge at the end of the first quarter. Blaine quarterback Jordan McCarty whipped the two-point conversion pass to Todd Bird out of his left side flanker position, giving the Borderites a 21-0 lead.

Middway through the second stanza, Statham struck again on an 18-yard scamper around left end, and McCarty found paydirt on a quarterback keeper in the third quarter.

Blaine wideout Trevor Chau set a Blaine school record for receiving yardage on a 13-yard reception from McCarty in the first quarter.

Blaine maintains a playoff spot in third place among 2A Northwest Conference teams with a 4-2 record, along with Squalicum. Mount Baker is hanging on to playoff hopes with a 3-3 record.
