Archbishop Murphy Wildcats Football

TACOMA – The Lynden Lions will play in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association class 2A high school football championship game for the third time in four years after mauling the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 38-14 Saturday in the Tacoma Dome

SMOKEY POINT - The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats continued to smash Cascade Conference competition, beating the Lakewood Cougars 42-20 Friday night in Lakewood. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference. The Lakewood Cougars have last their last four games and have fallen to 0-4 in conference and 2-4 overall.

Murphy benefited from a strong ground game led by running back Alex Martinez. Martinez contributed 122 yards on the ground on 11 carries and 1 touchdown. Quarterback Austin VanderWel chipped in with 2 rushing touchdowns on 8 carries. In total, the Wildcats amassed 347 yards on 47 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns.

The defense for Archbishop Murphy harassed Lakewood quarterback Justin Lane all night, never allowing Lane to get comfortable in the pocket. Lane finished 17 for 33 with 251 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Lakewood travels to Coupeville next Friday while Archbishop Murphy will host the undefeated Cedarcrest Wolves.

MILL CREEK – The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats improved to 3-0 in the Cascade Conference and 4-1 overall after beating the visiting Coupeville Wolves (1-2, 3-2) 56-0 Friday night at Terry Ennis Stadium.

The game was over before it started as the 1A Wolves were severely outmatched by the 2A Wildcats. Junior quarterback Austin VanderWel had an efficient night, completing 8 of 9 attempts for 121 yards and three touchdowns.  VanderWel also had a big night on the ground, gaining 98 yards on only five carries, including a 62 yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter.

Senior Alex Martinez carried the ball seven times for 76 yards and caught two VanderWel passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.  Martinez also threw a 11 yard touchdown pass to tight end Tani Tupou in the second quarter.

With the loss, the Coupeville Wolves fall to 1-2 in the Cascade Conference and 3-2 overall.  Coupeville will look to rebound next week against the Sultan Turks (0-3, 1-4).
