BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers capitalized on fumbles by South Whidbey on the Falcon’s first two possessions to take an early 14-0 lead enroute to a 45-0 blowout victory in the District One 2A high school football conference cross-overs Friday night at Kirkby Field.

Junior halfback Cody Larson’s spectacular 20-yard touchdown run just 85-seconds into the game gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead, and senior halfbacks Mikey Sanchez and Damon Acoba each added short scoring runs to give the Blue and Gold a 21-0 advantage before the first quarter was complete.

Led by the inspired performance of nose guard Jack Nevitt, the Burlington-Edison defense played one of its best games of the season in forcing five Falcon turnovers. The Tiger starters held South Whidbey star running back Henry Mead to just 18 yards on 18 carries.  Mead, who entered the game with more than 1400 yards, finished the night with 52 yards on 24 rushes, with nearly two-thirds of those yards coming against the Burlington-Edison junior varsity and third-string defense.

Safety Jeff Hayton returned an interception for a second quarter touchdown, dragging a pair of tacklers with him into the end zone, and sophomore fullback Andy Agen plunged across the goal-line from three yards out to put the Tigers up 35-0 at halftime. Acoba added his second touchdown run of the game late in the third quarter and kicker Andrew Furney drilled a 43-yard fourth quarter field goal to cap the scoring.

With the victory, Burlington-Edison raised its season record to 8-2, while South Whidbey’s season ended with a 4-6 mark. The Tigers will travel across Puget Sound to play Sequim in the state 2A playoffs next Saturday, November 14, and we’ll webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com with John Fasso and Scot Buchanan calling the action.

DEMING – Big plays by both teams highlighted Burlington-Edison’s 41-21 victory over Mount Baker Friday night in Northwest Conference high school football action.

The Tigers fell behind early for the fourth time in eight games this season after the Mountaineers recovered a fumble of the opening kickoff and David Kashubin capped the Mount Baker drive with a 14-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Mountaineer lead.

Burlington-Edison wasted little time responding when Cody Larson sprinted 68 yards for the game-tying touchdown just 50 seconds after the Mount Baker score for the first of 17 unanswered points. Damon Acoba’s 12-yard scoring run and the first of two Andrew Furney field goals gave the Tigers a 17-7 lead late in the first half, but Nick Jacoby pulled the Mountaineers to within three points at the intermission on a 58-yard punt return just before halftime to make the score 17-14.

The big plays continued in the third period when Burlington-Edison’s Mikey Sanchez followed a wall of blockers to the endzone on a 62-yard punt return and Larson took a Chris Burt pass 41 yards for a score to give the Tigers a 31-14 lead after three quarters.

Furney kicked a 43-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Sanchez capped the Tigers’ scoring with a 66-yard touchdown sprint to put Burlington-Edison on top 41-14 before Mount Baker quarterback Zac Lepper connected with Tim Breaux on a 60-yard touchdown pass to cap the scoring.

The Burlington-Edison victory sets up a showdown between the Tigers (7-1, 5-1) and Lynden Lions (7-1, 6-0) for the Northwest Conference title next Friday at Burlington’s Kirkby field.  Despite the loss, Mount Baker (4-4, 3-3) clinched a post-season berth as the fifth place team in the conference and will play the fourth place team from the Cascade Conference in a play-in game.

BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers positioned themselves for a possible league championship showdown with Lynden in two weeks by defeating Blaine 31-28 in Northwest Conference 2A football action Friday night at Kirkby Field.  The second half was played in a steady rain that affected the footing and ball handling for both teams.

Trailing by seven points following Blaine’s five-yard touchdown pass from Jordan McCarty to Todd Bird,  junior halfback Cody Larson sprinted 44 yards for Burlington-Edison’s first touchdown to ignite a 24-point second quarter and senior halfback Mikey Sanchez capped the scoring with a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Senior Achilles Wynn had a big night for the Tigers, scoring on a 19-yard run and 97-yard kickoff return. All state kicker Andrew Furney remained perfect for the season with four more extra points while adding a 28-yard field goal.

The victory gave the Tigers sole possession of second place in 2A Northwest Conference games with a 4-1 record (6-1 overall).  Blaine fell to 3-2 in conference, 4-3 overall.

The play-by-play voice of the Tigers, John Fasso, was joined on our webcast by Jay Alexander and Skagit Valley Herald sportswriter Eric Francis.  Scot Buchanan had the night off in order to attend the University of Washington Huskies game in Arizona and will return for our webcast Friday night when Burlington-Edison travels to Mt. ANACORTES -  After three weeks of lackluster first half performances, one of which resulted in a lopsided loss to Squalicum, the Burlington-Edison Tigers looked like the team they expected to be in manhandling Anacortes 45-7 Friday night in Northwest Conference high school football action.

With running backs Cody Larson and Mikey Sanchez combining for 241 yards, the Tigers averaged over ten yards per carry to re-establish a dominant rushing attack and help take some of the pressure off sophomore quarterback Chris Burt, who was starting his first varsity game in place of injured Dylan Boe.

While the Tigers were running virtually at will, Burt completed three passes in four attempts, all to tight end Jacob Schifferl, one of at least five Burlington-Edison offensive starters to return to their regular positions.

With their offensive line back at full strength the Tigers opened huge holes for Sanchez, who scored three touchdowns en route to 101 yards, and Larson, who capped a 140 yard night on only nine carries with a 41-yard touchdown run to give the blue-and-gold a 31-0 halftime lead.

“We wanted to put a quarterback back under center and get back our running game, said Tigers’ head coach Bruce Shearer.

The Tigers’ two-time all-state kicker Andrew Furney remained perfect this season with six more extra points and added a 37-yard field goal.  Burlington-Edison scored on a blocked punt for the second straight week when Achilles Wynn scooped up the loose ball and returned it 21 yards for the Tigers’ second touchdown.

Burlington-Edison (4-1) will host their archrivals, the undefeated Mount Vernon Bulldogs (5-0), in the annual Skagit Bowl next Friday at Kirkby Field in Burlington, which we’ll webcast live.  John Fasso and Scot Buchanan will provide play-by-play, commentary and stats, with their pre-game show from The Skagit Bowl starting at 6:30 p.m.
