POULSBO – Burlington-Edison coaches, fans, and players were left wondering what could have been and maybe what should have been after one of the greatest comebacks in the storied history of Tigers’ football ended with the Sequim Wolves celebrating a 34-32 victory Saturday night at North Kitsap High School in the opening round of the WIAA state 2A football playoffs.

Trailing 34-12 with 10:45 remaining in the game, Burlington-Edison’s offense came to life with three touchdowns, the last one on a 13-yard fourth down pass from quarterback Dylan Boe to wide receiver Achilles Wynn as time expired.

Needing a two-point conversion to force overtime, the Tigers sent Damon Acoba up the middle, where he had been successful all night, but the Sequim defense made one of the biggest plays in Wolves’ football history, stopping Acoba short of the endzone to secure the Sequim victory.

Acoba, who missed most of the season with an injury, had averaged 7.7 yards per carry prior to being stopped on the final play of the season for Burlington-Edison. Acoba finished with 123 yards to lead the Tigers in rushing. Boe completed 15-of-32 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, including three clutch completions to Wynn on the final drive.

After reaching the state championship game two years ago and losing in the state playoff semifinals last season, Burlington-Edison’s loss left the Tigers with an 8-3 season record. Sequim will take a 10-1 record into next weekend’s quarterfinal game against Lynden after the defending state champion Lions beat Black Hills 14-7.
