MOUNT VERNON – Nick Hayes’ fifth-inning RBI double provided the only run of the game as the Mount Vernon Bulldogs nipped the Sedro-Woolley Cubs 1-0 in 3A Northwest Conference baseball Wednesday afternoon at Sherman Anderson Field.

It was the second time in a week the Bulldogs beat the Cubs by the same 1-0 score.

Kelsey Leek led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice ground-out by T.J. Wright before Hayes drilled a 2-2 pitch to left-center field to score Leek.

Dan Barnet picked up his fourth win on the mound for Mount Vernon, while Travis Serna – last week’s 3-2 winner for the Cubs – takes the loss.

Mount Vernon goes to 8-5 in conference, 9-8 overall. Sedro-Woolley drops to 6-6 in conference and 6-11 overall.

Kris Drake webcast the game live on SkagitRadio.com and will have play by play of Burlington-Edison visiting Mount Vernon this Friday, May 1 in NWC baseball.
