Girls – The Mount Baker Mountaineers rode a 25-point night from Jovanna Baisden to a 61-35 win over the Blaine Borderites in Northwest Conference girls’ basketball action on Friday night in Blaine.

Baisden drained seven three-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Mounties. Eight different Mountaineers got into the scoring act as Taylor Coston chipped in 11 points and yanked down nine rebounds. Overall, a great team effort was put forth by Head Coach Brenda Ellis’ Mount Baker team. Baisden earned the “Web Star of the Game” honors with her 25 points.

The Baker Girls improved their record to 3-2. Blaine dropped to 1-4.

Boys: The Mount Baker boys got balanced scoring with three players in double figures in their 61-54 win over Blaine in the second game of the double-header.

Spencer Backstrom and Anderson Bass log rolled the Borderites with both scoring 13 points each for Mount Baker. Nick Jacoby added 10 for the physical and unselfish Mountaineers and Jacob Kernells brought down nine rebounds as well for the Mounties.

Mount Baker withstood a scoring barrage by the Borderites’ Trey Bakageorge, who knocked down five three-pointers on his way to 25 points and taking game high honors. Ultimately it was Blaine’s inability to effectively manage the shot clock, settling for too many early looks as the Mounties used their size advantage to dominate the glass .

The Baker Boys moved to 4-0 – one of their better starts in recent memory. The Borderites dropped to 2-2 on the season.

TACOMA – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs exited the WIAA State 3A Fastpitch Tournament at the hands of Union High School of Camas, who overcame a 2-0 Sedro-Woolley lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on their only three hits of the game, to win 4-2.

Sedro-Woolley’s offense came from Wendy Ringhouse, who knocked in Anna Gallagher (running for Ashley Joneli) in the fifth, and Maddie Lynch-Crumrine, who tripled and was driven in by Holly Hawkins’ single in the sixth.

The Titans scored all of their runs in the sixth on a single by Alex Cline, a double from Jamie Henderson, a double by Lindsay Sasse, a two base error, and a sacrifice fly to center from Mariah Dawson.

Two critical errors played a major part in the big inning for the Titans – a pop fly between the pitchers circle and third base that dropped for a two base error and an ill conceived throw to third after a wild pitch that went into left field and allowed a run to score.

Bailey Brewer gave up three hits and struck out 11 in the losing effort and smacked a double to deep left field in the fourth but was stranded after Union’s Maria Dawson struck out the next three batters.

The Cubs are poised for a return trip to State next year as all of their starters except senior Wendy Ringhouse will be back to play for the blue and white.

BURLINGTON – Our team at SkagitRadio.com would like to express our sincere gratitude to our listeners, each of our great local sponsors, the players, parents, coaches and school administrators whom we worked for and with in webcasting every B-EHS basketball game from the state 2A tournaments in Yakima.

As the only local sportscasters who personally made the trip to follow both Tigers basketball teams, we were excited to be there, pleased to be providing quality coverage, and blown away by the number of listeners we had, and the many email and text messages we received in support of what we’re doing. Thank You!

We think it’s all about the local teams and our communities that support them, and at SkagitRadio.com we take pride in providing the very best coverage for those sports fans who cannot attend the games, and for anyone who’d like to listen at their convenience or download a copy from our free archives – which are now available immediately following the live webcast.

We hope you enjoyed our calls of all six B-EHS Tigers games at state (and seven La Conner Braves’ and Lady Braves’ games the previous week from Spokane) and we encourage you to save us to your Internet “bookmarks” or “favorites” list.

We also invite you to continue visiting SkagitRadio.com this spring for our coverage of baseball and fast-pitch softball. Beginning next week we’ll be bringing you spring sports coverage of all our Skagit County teams, and looking ahead to next football season, SkagitRadio.com will not only follow the Tigers every week, we’ll also have additional webcast teams covering Concrete, La Conner, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley football here on the worldwide home for Skagit County high school sports – SkagitRadio.com.

YAKIMA – The Squalicum Storm continued their incredible winning streak through to the 2A boys’ basketball championship game at the SunDome, dominating as the #1 2A team and defeating the Burlington-Edison Tigers 60-49 Saturday night, a repeat of the District One title game.

Squalicum’s last loss was a 79-50 Mater Dei victory (the #1 team in the nation out of Southern California) during a Christmas break tournament, but the Storm returned home to win 18 consecutive games before cutting the nets down in Yakima.

Tournament MVP Keith Stackhouse knocked down 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and passed off four assists for the Storm. Patrick Voeut led Squalicum with 16 points in the title game. Kyle Hooper chipped in 13 and Derek Dickerson also had 11 for the Storm.

The Tigers started the game missing their first seven attempts from the field. Down nine points in the first four minutes, Burlington-Edison had to play catch-up the rest of the game, trailing 21-6 after one, 36-20 at halftime, but got to within ten after the third quarter 47-37.

Burlington-Edison’s Colin Stewart led the Tigers with 15 points while Evan Coulter added nine. Coulter had been scoring over 20 points in the three previous tournament games, returning the Tigers to the championship game for the second straight season.

Of the four games Squalicum played leading up to the title contest, the point spread was much tighter against Burlingt0n-Edison compared to the prior Storm opponents, which was a testament to the Tigers’ defensive game. The only factor of Squalicum’s game the Tigers could not stop was the sneaky Patrick Voeut’s shooting (6-of-9, 2-of-3 for 3-pointers).

Ian Capron, the lone Tiger senior, caps his basketball career with the Blue and Gold by being named to the 2A All-Tournament second team for his outstanding rebounding prowess. Evan Coulter was named to the All-Tournament first team while averaging over 20 points per game.

Stackhouse and Dickerson were also named to the first team from Squalicum, with Voeut named to the second team.

In the girls’ championship game, it was also a repeat of the District One title game, but the results switched as the Lynden Lions upset the #1 ranked Archbishop Murphy Wildcats 48-41 for the 2A trophy.

Boys’ placings: First place, Squalicum over Burlington-Edison 60-49. Third place, River Ridge over (6th) Fife 49-40. Fifth place, North Mason over (8th) Quincy 54-36. Fourth place, Clarkston over (7th) Toppenish 65-51.

Girls’ placings: First place, Lynden over Archbishop Murphy 48-41. Third place, West Valley-Spokane over (6th) Prosser 63-49. Fifth place, Othello over (8th) Pullman 62-55. Fourth place, Elma over (7th) Ellensburg 52-46.

Brenna Anderson led the Tigers with eight points while Virginia Brown and Nichole Arndt each added seven points.

Burlington-Edison had no answer on defense for Othello’s Kylee Mollotte’s ability to lob the ball inside to the double, often triple-covered Allison Walker, who scored 17 points. Walker was able to outjump Tiger defenders for high lob passes down low to score off the backboard. The Huskies were fouled underneath repeatedly, but were only able to convert 8-of-15 from the line.

Burlington-Edison ended another terrific season with a record of 17-9 and will lose only one senior, Sarah Stewart, who played stellar defense against Othello and added four points in defeat.

The 2B state academic champions for girls’ basketball fell to Liberty Bell 53-32, but return home with La Conner High School’s first ever girls’ basketball state tournament trophy (seventh place).

Julie Hulbert led the Braves with nine points, while Megan Raymond added eight. Lauren McClung and Kelsey Kennedy both chipped in six points.

La Conner was outmatched by the three-point shooting prowess of the Lady Lions, while Liberty Bell also made 20-of-23 from the free throw line.

____________________________________________________________

SPOKANE – La Conner Brave girls’ team started off red hot against the Toutle Lake Ducks in a loser-out game in the consolation bracket of the 2B Girls’ State Tournament, shooting 7-of-11 from the field – three of those 3-pointers by Kelsey Kennedy – and never looked back in their 43-34 victory Friday afternoon.

Kennedy led all scorers with 23 points for the Braves while shooting 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Megan Raymond added 14 points with 9 rebounds and was 6-of-6 from the field. Julie Hulbert had five blocked shots for La Conner on the defensive side.

La Conner has clinched the first girls’ team trophy in school history, and will play the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions of Winthrop Saturday at 1:45 p.m. for either 4th or 7th place. Pre-game on SkagitRadio.com will be 1:30 p.m.

It should also be noted the La Conner Braves girls’ team were crowned Academic Champions for the 2008-09 school year for 2B schools with their collective grade point average. Congratulations to La Conner’s exceptionally intelligent lady hoopsters.

___________________________________________________________

SPOKANE – On the boys’ side, the Braves ended their great 13-8 season in a 54-31 lose to the Napavine Tigers Friday afternoon at the 2B State Tournament in the Spokane Arena. La Conner was unable to keep pace with Napavine’s 55% shooting from the field.

Jeremy Vander Lei, Galen McKnight, and Ethan Anderson concluded their senior seasons at the state tournament, with McKnight returning from a torn ACL he injury he suffered during the fall soccer season, an injury he was not expected to come back from in time to play any basketball.
