TACOMA – The Sedro-Woolley Cubs capped a dominating day during which they posted four straight shutouts with an impressive 10-0 victory over Bainbridge Island in the 3A state softball championship game.

All four Sedro-Woolley wins were webcast live on SkagitRadio.com, with Jon Jensen providing play-by-play of the first two games and Mike Leeper calling the semi finals and state championship game. Jensen had a prior sports broadcasting commitment that prevented him from calling the two evening games and we thank Leeper for his clutch performance that allowed us to webcast the night games.

SEDRO WOOLLEY - The Mount Vernon Bulldogs boys’ basketball team rode a roller coaster in the Sedro-Woolley gym Friday night in a Northwest Conference 3A matchup, eventually coming to rest with a 60-45 victory over the upstart Cubs.

Sedro-Woolley led 8-6 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs exploded for 22 points in the second period to take an 11-point lead into halftime. The Cubs battled back by holding Mount Vernon to just eight third quarter points, and the game was tied at 36 early in the fourth quarter.

Mount Vernon hit the gas pedal again to break the tie score and outscored Sedro Woolley by 15 points down the stretch to earn the victory. The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by Jake Weber-Koetje’s 15 points. Kelsey Leek added 14 points, while Dan Barnet and Chris Chaplin each scored 10 points for Mount Vernon, as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 with the victory.

Sophomore Isaac Bianchini had 17 points to lead Sedro Woolley, while fellow sophomore Andrew Minkel also had a strong performance and ended the night with 10 points before fouling out with 4:14 to go in the game. The Cubs fell to 0-6 with the loss, but will have one more shot at victory before Christmas when they host LaConner on Tuesday.

Mount Vernon won’t be back in action until December 30th when they’ll play at South Whidbey. Our next webcast of Bulldogs’ basketball is scheduled for January 2nd, when Mount Vernon will host Marysville-Pilchuck.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Looking a lot like the same team that blew through three state tournament opponents last year on their way to a second place trophy, the Burlington-Edison Tigers sprinted to an early 10-1 lead on their way to overpowering Sedro-Woolley 92-37 Saturday night in boys’ high school basketball.

The game was a reflection of the current overall state of both schools’ programs, as Burlington-Edison is in the midst of possibly the best run of teams in school history, with consecutive appearances in the state championship game, while the inexperienced Cubs are in the second year of a rebuilding process.

Starting five seniors, including one of the state’s premier point guards in Evan Coulter, the Tigers showed rare season-opening poise in overcoming an injury to senior guard Craig Babington just 14-seconds into the game. Babington sustained a sprain to his left ankle that was described as a level one, which usually require 7-10 days to heal.

With Coulter scoring 32 points and Colin Stewart adding 19 to lead four Tigers in double figures, and Burlington-Edison’s pressure defense forcing an unofficial 17 first-half turnovers, coach Rick Skeen’s team had sealed the fate of Sedro-Woolley by halftime when they led 43-11.

“We played a little short-handed”, said Skeen in referring not only to Babington’s ankle sprain but also to the absence of potential starters Jacob Schifferl and Eric Walser, “I thought the guys who were out there played really hard.”

To Sedro-Woolley’s credit, the Cubs hustled to the final buzzer and gave a glimpse of their potential in the third quarter when they played the powerful Tigers even until Coulter’s three-point buzzer beater gave Burlington-Edison an 18-15 advantage in the period.

The Tigers’ aggressive and sometimes smothering defense held Levi Stewart to just seven points after the Sedro-Woolley senior had averaged more than 20 in the Cubs’ first two games of the season. Stewart and Kellen Engberg are the only seniors seeing significant playing time for the Cubs, who were led by sophomore Isaac Bianchini’s 15 points.

EVERETT – Taking advantage of turnovers in high school football is what coaches dream of. This must have been a dream game for Everett head coach Will Soren as his Gulls trounced the Sedro-Woolley Cubs Tuesday night in a play-in game 41-6 at Everett Stadium to advance into the 3A playoff bracket.

The Gulls first scored as Chase Herrick came in from his linebacker position and picked off Cub quarterback Joe Janicki’s pass, intended for Kellen Engberg, and returned the interception 25 yards, just five minutes into the game. Herrick repeated finding the endzone, this time on offense, with a one-yard keeper in the second quarter. A third touchdown, a two-yard touchdown plunge by fullback George Posadas in the second quarter looked to put the game out of reach for the Cubs playoff hopes.

The second half demonstrated more of the same pounding by Everett’s offense as Herrick connected with tight end Luke Frauenholtz on a perfectly-timed 14-yard lob to the back right corner of the end zone, followed by a 34-yard scamper by running back Garrick Koehler.

Sedro-Woolley scored their final touchdown of the season when Ian O’Bryan found a gap in the line and darted through for a 14-yard run.

Everett wrapped up the scoring with a 51-yard run by Ty Sissel, who ripped around the left corner on a sweep and outran the defense in garbage time.

Everett now has the unenviable task of facing the #1 ranked Lakes Lancers in the opening round of the 3A playoffs this weekend. The lose marks the end of a difficult season for the 4-5 Cubs, which saw starting quarterback Derek Garcia end his season on a leg injury that required surgery and the sudden loss of one of their assistant coaches, Denny Engberg.

EDMONDS - The Lynnwood Royals got their fourth touchdown from tailback Typhis Cochran with just over two minutes to go and their defense sealed a 34-32 win when it sacked and stripped the ball from Sedro-Woolley quarterback Joe Janicki on fourth and two with just 12 seconds remaining.

The win capped a huge day for Royals’ tailback Cochran, who put on a clinic with his speed and elusive moves. Cochran rushed for 165 yards on 16 attempts, ran for one touchdown, and had three pass receptions for touchdowns. He was joined in the scoring column by Coleman Bryant’s 43-yard touchdown pass from Royals’ quarterback Mike Stanley, who completed 14-of-21 attempts for 285 yards and four touchdowns.

Sedro-Woolley was led by Ian O’Bryan with 22 rushing attempts for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Clayton Johnson, who rushed 11 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. Brett Wood and Kellen Engberg added a touchdown reception each from Janicki, who completed 10-of-16 passes for 153 yards and two scores.

The Royals (1-8, 0-4) picked up their first win of the year, while the Cubs fell to 4-5 with the non-league loss.

Sedro-Woolley will now play the Wesco 3A third place team, the Everett Gulls (also 4-5) on Tuesday at Everett Memorial Stadium Tuesday, November 3rd with the winner advancing to play the top ranked Lakes Lancers of the South Puget Sound League.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Periodic downpours throughout Friday night’s 3A Northwest Conference matchup between the Sedro-Woolley Cubs (1-1, 4-4) and the Mount Vernon Bulldogs (0-1, 5-3) helped only the home team Cubs in a 10-7 mudfight, which might give Sedro-Woolley the advantage come playoff time in just two short weeks. The win also stopped the Cubs’ three-game losing streak.

The swampy, splashy football field bogged down every player except for Cub running back Clayton Johnson, who scored on a 49-yard touchdown run. He was able to slosh for over 100 yards rushing in the game.

All 17 points were scored in the second quarter and the Cubs’ defense seized the victory as the clock wound down in the fourth quarter.

Mount Vernon quarterback Jake Weber-Koetje, who previously threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Joe Barrington for the only Bulldog score, was tackled by linebacker Austin Pulver on a crucial fourth down to seal the game for Sedro-Woolley on the Bulldogs’ last drive of the game.

The difference in the game was a 32-yard field goal by Sedro-Woolley’s Joe Janicki, who had the benefit of the wind at his back during the kick.

DEMING – It took overtime for the Mount Baker Mountaineers to win their homecoming game 23-20 over the Sedro-Woolley Cubs in a battle of 3-2 NWC high school football teams.

Jose Mata, who kicked a Mount Baker school record 40-yard field goal in their 53-0 blowout of Sehome last week, kicked a game-winning 25-yard field goal on overtime to seal the homecoming victory after the Mounties plowed through the Sedro-Woolley defense to set up the winning kick.

Ian O’Brien charged through the left side of his offensive line from four yards out to tie the game at 20 at the 3:37 mark in the fourth quarter. The extra point by Joe Janicki was just outside the right upright and after regulation the game was tied at 20 points apiece.

Sedro-Woolley scored first on a one-yard touchdown run by Clayton Johnson in the first quarter.

Mount Baker scored in the second quarter on a 43-yard touchdown strike from Zak Lepper to wideout Logan Packard, who hauled the long pass into his fingertips in stride.

O’Brien scored his first touchdown in the third quarter from 11 yards out by scampering and cutting his way between the outstretched arms of Mount Baker defenders.

The Mountaineers lone running back, David Kashubin, who was limited to only 67 yards rushing in this game, trucked in from 14 yards away for his eighth touchdown of the season. And as the third quarter ended, Lepper connected with Packard again for an 11-yard strike into the corner of the endzone to put Mount Baker up 20-14 after three quarters. The extra point by Mata was blocked by the Cubs Ian O’Brien.

O’Brien led all rushers with 16 carries for 121 yards.

Lepper was 16-for-29 with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Mount Baker improves to 4-2 while Sedro-Woolley evens out to 3-3.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Cub quarterback Derek Garcia kept the ball on a power sweep to the left midway through the first quarter and was met by Shorecrest cornerback Jordan Brown converging in head-first on the tackle as Garcia’s right foot planted into the turf. Garcia buckled to the ground instantly, grasping at his leg. As other Cub players righted themselves from the grass, some noticed Garcia holding his leg in pain. He wasn’t getting up.

After Garcia was helped off the field, Cub head coach Bryan Alexander jumped to Plan B to continue, with Joe Janicki at quarterback. But even with a few slight adjustments, a deflated feeling came over the Cub team, as well as the fans. Their leader was out.

From that point on, Shorecrest took the momentum and refused to relinquish it until they conquered the Garcia-less Cubs 20-8 Friday night in a non-conference 3A matchup in Sedro-Woolley.

The Scots found the endzone early in the second quarter as backup quarterback Michael Johnson threw a screen pass to the right side to fullback David Cannon, who peeled off blocking a charging Cub defensive end to haul in a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Cannon found the endzone in the third quarter by sprinting straight up the middle for 15 yards on a seven-play, 41-yard drive.

Ian O’Brien scored the Cubs’ only touchdown from three yards out in the fourth quarter, before Kellen Engberg, providing the hold on Joe Janicki’s extra point attempt. On a designed play, Engberg stalled after receiving the ball from the long snapper, jumped up and rushed in from the left side, past the over-committed Shorecrest special teams defense.

The Scots capped the win when starting quarterback Ted Hammond rolled out to the right and hit Kofi Asiedo on a 25-yard touchdown strike late in the game.

Jordan Brown led all rushers with 19 carries for 131 yards. Cannon had eight rushes for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

O’Brien had nine carries for 26 yards for the Cubs.

Next Friday, the Cubs head up Highway 9 to face the Mount Baker Mountaineers in a Northwest Conference matchup in Deming. The game will be webcast on SkagitRadio.com.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – Still riding the emotional wave from losing assistant football coach Denny Engberg to a heart attack last week, the Sedro-Woolley Cubs continued their focus to win for Coach Engberg with a 33-7 victory over Northwest Conference cross-county rivals, the Anacortes Seahawks Friday night at home.

Cub quarterback Derek Garcia drove the Sedro-Woolley offense down the field twice in the first half to score on short-yardage touchdowns, once in each quarter, making the halftime score 13-0.

Halfway through the third quarter, Anacortes running back Dan Codd took a shotgun snap, faked left then utilized blocks on a sweep right and dashed to the front endzone pylon for the lone Seahawk touchdown.

Ian O’Brien scampered around left end with three minutes left in the third quarter for a long 40-yard touchdown run for the Cubs’ third touchdown. O’Brien was untouched after taking the pitch from Garcia, a credit to the blocking from the Cub offensive line throughout the game.

Harley Lee took a handoff from Garcia in the fourth quarter from one yard out to extend the Cubs’ lead 26-7.

With under two minutes left and reserves filling each position, Sedro-Woolley’s Wade Huber found his way through Seahawk defenders with a 2-yard touchdown run to cap off Sedro-Woolley’s offensive onslaught.

The Cubs extend their season record to 3-1 with their third straight win, and second victory in a row “for Coach Engberg.”
