BURLINGTON – The Burlington-Edison Tigers rode great relief pitching from Zach Holtzheimer and a three run outburst in the sixth inning for a 5-4 win over the Mount Vernon Bulldogs. Holtzheimer relieved Jordan Perry with no outs in the 4th inning and struck out six and walked two in his 4 innings of work to earn the win. Richard Dutton went the distance for the bulldogs and took the loss.

Burlington-Edison’s big inning offensively came in the sixth as an error allowed Jacob Schifferl to not only reach first, but take second on a bad throw to first. That play was followed by a walk and a sacrifice bunt that put the runners on second and third with one out.

Sid Livingston’s single scored both runners. Chris Vivanco’s double down the right field line then scored Livingston to push the lead to 5-2.

The Bulldogs then put up two runs in their half of the seventh on a T.J. Wright double to deep center field. Derek Almanza then singled Wright home on a drive to the fence in left field. Wright eventually scored the Bulldog’s final run off a Nick Hayes double to right center.

We’ll be following the Burlington-Edison Tigers next week in their “away and home” series against the Anacortes Seahawks with games on Monday and Tuesday afternoon here on SkagitRadio.com.

BURLINGTON – Trailing by two late in the second quarter, the Burlington-Edison Tigers scored the final nine points of the first half and never looked back en route to a 68-48 victory over Shorecrest Tuesday night in boys’ high school basketball.

In a game featuring two of the top teams in the state, it was the aggressive and relentless defense played by Tiger coach Rick Skeen’s team that turned a seesaw first half into another double-digit Burlington-Edison win, their fifth in six games this season.

After an exciting first half that featured 12 lead changes and five ties before Burlington-Edison’s late run, the Tigers limited the Scots to just nine third-quarter points and eight points in the final eight minutes. Evan Coulter’s 21 points led three Tigers in double figures scoring, with Colin Stewart adding 13 points and Craig Babington scoring 10.

Burlington-Edison’s Jacob Schifferl was chosen by announcers Fred Lee and John Fasso as the Mister T’s Awards and Embroidery player of the game after keying the Tigers’ run at the end of the second quarter when he scored seven of his nine points and grabbed numerous rebounds.

The Tigers will host Anacortes Tuesday, Jan 5 in a girls’ and boys’ basketball doubleheader, with the Seahawks and Burlington-Edison girls scheduled to tip off at 6 pm and the boys to follow at 8 pm. We’ll webcast both of those games live here on SkagitRadio.com.
