MOUNT VERNON – Dominating both lines of scrimmage, the Burlington-Edison Youth Football League Seniors overpowered Lakewood 24-7 Saturday night at Mount Vernon High School.
With the offensive line of center Jaime Upham, guards Patrick Milstead and Robert Summers, tackles Dakota Villegas and Isiah Muffenbeier, and tight end Logan Martinson opening huge holes, running backs Tyler Morrison, Eli Aguilar and Hunter Weber ran wild as the young (ages 13 & 14) Tigers accomplished the rare and phenomenal feat of exceeding more than 300-yards rushing, finishing with 305-yards on 45 carries.
Morrison powered his way to a game high 119-yards and scored the first two Tigers touchdowns, Weber’s 84-yards included a 36-yard third quarter touchdown run, and Aguilar scored Burlington-Edison’s final TD on his way to 94 yards. As a benefit of their running game, Tigers’ quarterback Drew Lomsdalen threw just two passes, completing a 14-yarder to Martinson.
Both teams scored on their first possessions of the game, with Morrison scoring on a three yard run to put the Tigers on top 6-0, and Lakewood answering with an impressive drive capped by Keana Jackson’s 8-yard touchdown run. A conversion pass from Cougars quarterback Eric Murray to Flanker Mike Raz gave Lakewood a 7-6 lead that stood until Morrison’s five-yard scoring run wth 1:28 remaining in the first half put Burlington-Edison ahead 12-6.
The Tigers defense preserved the lead with a goal line stand on the final play of the first half, and shut down the Lakewood offense in the second half, holding the Cougars to minus-12 yards rushing in the final two quarters.
With the victory, Burlington-Edison earned a berth into the Youth League Super Bowl next weekend against Friday Harbor, which upset number one seed Sedro-Woolley 48-26 in the other semi final game. The site and date of the Youth League Super Bowl is still to be determined, and we’ll post details here on SkagitRadio.com as soon as the information is available.
