by Wade Tonkin on November 8, 2009

BELLINGHAM -  The Ferndale Golden Eagles overcame a wet field and the speedy and determined West Seattle Wildcats to advance to the round of 16 in the WIAA 3A Football Tournament with a 28-21 win in high school football action Saturday night at Civic Field.

With the game tied at 21-21 Ferndale’s Brandon Maarhuis broke through the line on a fourth-and-inches play early in the fourth quarter, found daylight in the West Seattle defensive backfield, and rumbled 31-yards for his third touchdown of the game, giving the Golden-Eagles the 28-21 lead they held for the victory.

Willy Scott contributed heavily for Ferndale with 154 yards on 19 rushing attempts, and added a 38 yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jake Frost early in the first quarter.
